DeepSeek AI: The Game-Changer Disrupting Tech Markets

DeepSeek AI: China’s Chatbot Disrupting Global Tech Markets

DeepSeek AI, a powerful Chinese chatbot, has become the top app on the Apple Store, shaking global tech markets. Its rapid rise has caused major tech stocks, including Nvidia, to decline, with the company losing $600 billion in a single day.

Launched on January 20, DeepSeek’s low-cost development sets it apart. Unlike OpenAI’s models, it runs without thousands of high-end chips, making AI more accessible.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump called it a “wake-up call” for American firms, urging them to stay competitive. Meanwhile, China accelerates AI innovation, despite U.S. efforts to restrict its tech growth.

With President Xi Jinping prioritizing AI, China is shifting from manufacturing to advanced technology. DeepSeek leads this transformation, proving China is now innovating on a global scale.

What is DeepSeek?

DeepSeek AI: The Affordable Chatbot Taking on ChatGPT

DeepSeek AI is a free chatbot similar to ChatGPT, helping users with questions, math, and coding. Experts debate its performance, but reports suggest it rivals OpenAI’s o1 model, known for strong reasoning skills.

What sets DeepSeek apart is its low memory usage and cost-efficiency. While OpenAI reportedly spent $100 million to train GPT-4, DeepSeek’s creators developed it for just $6 million.

Like other Chinese AI models (Baidu’s Ernie, ByteDance’s Doubao), DeepSeek avoids politically sensitive topics. When asked about Tiananmen Square (June 4, 1989), it replied, “I’m sorry, but I cannot answer that.” This censorship limits its global reach, but developers ensure it is trained on authentic data while filtering restricted content.

DeepSeek operates using a mix of Nvidia A100 chips (banned from export to China since 2022) and cheaper alternatives. Founder Liang Wenfeng reportedly stockpiled 50,000 chips, making development more affordable.

Despite its success—it recently became Apple’s most downloaded free app in the US—DeepSeek has faced malicious attacks and temporary registration limits. Its website even crashed due to overwhelming demand.

With its rapid rise, DeepSeek AI is proving to be a strong competitor in the AI race, pushing China further into AI innovation.

Who is behind DeepSeek?

DeepSeek AI Founder Liang Wenfeng: The Innovator Leading China’s AI Revolution

Liang Wenfeng founded DeepSeek AI in December 2023 and launched the company’s first AI model the following year. A Zhejiang University graduate with degrees in electronic information engineering and computer science, Liang has quickly become a global AI leader.

As the CEO of High-Flyer, China’s first quant hedge fund to raise over 100 billion yuan ($13 million), he has combined AI with finance to revolutionize investment strategies. In 2019, he predicted that China could surpass the US in trading volume. Today, he urges China to shift from imitation to true innovation in AI.

When asked why DeepSeek surprised Silicon Valley, Liang explained: “They are shocked to see a Chinese company leading in innovation, not just following trends.” His vision is reshaping the AI industry and strengthening China’s position in the global AI race.
